"Sleepy" was on new medication and tried to put his head down every day. "Grumpy" blamed all his problems on his old chemistry teacher and on me. "Sweetie" ate lunch with me but rarely did her homework and didn’t take the class seriously. "Angry" threw rubber stoppers and tried to burn random things in lab. All finished the year with low scores on the AP test and poor second-semester grades. Why have them in there at all? Well the main reason was that I didn’t get to pre-select students… But knowing what I know now I would welcome them all into my AP chemistry class. All four former students have stopped by in the last few days to say hi. All have reported earning A’s and B’s in freshman chemistry. Sleepy and Grumpy are in engineering one at Virginia Tech and one at Georgia Tech. Angry and Sweetie are in the University of Maryland system. Angry said he never had to study for chemistry unlike his roommates. Sweetie said she learned so much in AP that her chemistry class is easy now.

gif’summary: ‘Thursday May 24 2007 – Chemistry professor William H. Miller was recognized in a ceremony on Tuesday for receiving the Welch Award in Chemistry… Miller said he considered the Welch Award to be his most prestigious award to date. ?The best thing after the thrill of discovery itself is the respect and recognition of our peers? Miller said. Unlike the Nobel Prize in Chemistry which is awarded for a specific discovery the Welch Award recognizes lifetime achievement and significant contribution to the field. Since its establishment in 1972 five of the 36 Welch Awards have gone to UC Berkeley faculty most recently in 2006. Previous winners at UC Berkeley include Neil Bartlett in 1976 Kenneth Pitzer in 1984 and George Pimentel in 1986. Miller said the award represents the growing importance of theoretical chemistry in the wider scientific community. ?It feels very nice.

From a leaping David Wright’s walk-off hit against the Yankees to an 11-run two-grand slam inning against the Cubs (which moves SNY’s Gary Cohen to exclaim “This team could accomplish just about anything!”) to that sweet champagne-soaked Sept. 18 clincher — no notable moment goes unheralded. Nor does the unique chemistry of the ’06 Mets clubhouse go without celebration. Never-before-seen footage from the All-Star Game captures some of the spirit and fun of the six players in attendance — a franchise record. At the CENTURY 21 Home Run Derby Wright and Paul Lo Duca tease each other while Jose Reyes acts as cheerleader. And after Wright knocks out a home run in his first All-Star at-bat Tom Glavine jokes “You keep it up you’re gonna be as popular as me one day. ” Wright’s response? “I can only hope to be half as popular as you Glav.
