City student wins bronze at Chemistry lympiad
Hindu – Jul 31, 2007
Immanuel Ilavarasan. Immanuel Ilavarasan who begins his Computer Science Engineering course at the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras on Monday it has been a season of success. After topping the State in the IIT—Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) by obtaining the 39th rank he won a bronze medal at the Chemistry lympiad which concluded in Moscow last week. Back after spending over a week with 265 finalists from 68 countries Immanuel described the experience as having been “fantastic”. Four students from the country chosen from nearly 30000 candidates who took the preliminary examination for selection received intensive training at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) Mumbai for nearly a month before they left. And the training seems to have paid off.

Barcodes in Clinical Chemistry Laboratory

Be it a huge departmental store which handles biscuit packets or a laboratory which handles cholesterol test to homocysteine test the barcode seems to be a basic necessity. nce the barcode is logically introduced in an establishment it can provide almost all perceivable comforts for men machine methods materials and the management. Fortunately our laboratory handles 98 per cent of the tests only in serum and that has been a great advantage for us to experiment and shift to ‘completely bar-coded’ operations within 12 months of its introduction. We introduced a vial with a barcode on its label which has a capacity to hold two ml of serum (which can be sufficient to do more than 50 tests) and we called it as a ‘Bar-coded Serum Vial’ or BSV.

Knowing that you’re going into a game and you have a slim chance of winning is very difficult and I’m a very confident person I try to instill confidence in everybody around me and sometimes it gets hard but what’s refreshing about this whole panel up here is knowing that each and every night I have an above average chance to win and even though the onus is gonna be on the three of us with how well we gel quickly how so this chemistry comes together you know the small things that you guys have no insight about but we know that gelling and chemistry is a big part of this. Knowing that I have a chance every night that I don’t have to go out and get 25 3020 rebounds you know I don’t have to do that every night but I’m very capable of doing that and I don’t know man it just feels good feels good to have two big guns on the side of me feels real good. Q: “To all three of you in your mind are the Celtics the team to beat in the Eastern Conference?”Garnett: “Well again chemistry is a big thing. And with Cleveland with respect to them and winning the east last year I think the east has gotten a lot better additions to the Knicks rlando has gotten better you know Detroit you can’t ever count them out Cleveland I mean it’s definitely the Eastern Conference has gotten better. I wouldn’t go that far to say that we’re the team to beat cause we still have things to prove. We still have to work on chemistry and bonding we like I said are gonna be a force to be reckoned with… And with Cleveland with respect to them and winning the east last year I think the east has gotten a lot better additions to the Knicks rlando has gotten better you know Detroit you can’t ever count them out Cleveland I mean it’s definitely the Eastern Conference has gotten better. Allen: “I personally try not to worry about what’s going on in the rest of the league and trying to build what we have here and team chemistry and working with the guys that are gonna come in and the guys like the Rondo’s the Rajon Rondo’s and Tony Allen and Scalabrine and the other guys that are on the team and we have a lot that we want to build towards. And training camp starts we’re going overseas this year we’ll have a great time to bond through traveling playing against some international competition and then before you know it the season will be here and it’s the small things really that are gonna equal up to the big things and when we take care of those small things we’ll look up and our standing will be in a pretty good place. Kevin’s a passionate guy and Paul’s passionate but they’re also stubborn they’re also ornery and I’m the same way.

University of Houston Professors to Talk About Chemical Breakthroughs

Harold professor and department chair of chemical engineering is presenting his research on a Pd membrane reactor that converts a fuel such as gasoline propane or methanol into a high-purity stream of hydrogen which can then be used to make electricity in a fuel cell. Montgomery Pettitt Cullen professor of chemistry is conducting two presentations on the fundamental advances made in liquid state theory in the last two years. He will apply these new methods to demonstrate how the macromolecules of life recognize each other. Boris Makarenko a research assistant professor of chemistry and J. Wayne Rabalais professor emeritus of chemistry and vice president for research at Lamar University will discuss how the preferable adsorption position of sodium atom on copper surface is determined experimentally for the first time which is fundamentally important and can promote catalytic reactions enhance oxidation and increase electron emission rates. Summer science program still inspiring students
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette – Pittsburgh Post Gazette – Jul 31, 2007
“I had AP physics but this is a different type of physics”said Cecily Sunday 17 of McCandless a senior at North AlleghenyHigh School. “That’s why I like this program. It’s not just chemistry; it’sorganic chemistry. It’s not just physics but special relativity. It’s not just biology; it’s HIV and molecular. They do a reallygood job of teaching stuff that people aren’t familiar with”Cecily said. The five areas covered during the five weeks include physicsmath chemistry computer science and biology.
