Cal given $10 million by Dow Chemical to work on sustainability

She said examples of potential projects include increasing the level of clean drinking water in impoverished parts of the world or looking at alternative and renewable energy materials such as sugar cane. Sustainability focuses on meeting the needs of the present generation without jeopardizing fulfilling the needs of the future said McElhaney. In partnership with Cal’s College of Chemistry the program is being established initially with $2 million from the Dow foundation which has promised $8 million more over the next five years. The foundation said it will also help raise funding from other companies and foundations. UC Berkeley officials described the funding as a gift – not corporate-sponsored research – and said all proprietary rights will remain with the university. Critics have noted however that Dow executive Tony Kingsbury has been given a non-salaried position in Haas’ Center for Responsible Business which will oversee the program. He will also serve as a non-voting member of the faculty steering committee that will direct the program.
