Chemists Set New World Record For Shortest Chemical Bond Between…
Science Daily – Science Daily (press release) – Nov 25, 2007
“Sometimes things like this just happen” said Klaus Theopold professor and chairperson of the UD Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Theopold and Kevin Kreisel who graduated with his doctorate from UD in August and is now a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Wisconsin made the finding working with research associate Glenn Yap and postdoctoral fellow lga Dmitrenko both from UD and Clark Landis a colleague from the University of Wisconsin. Theopold has been researching the chemistry of chromium for a long time. The metal is an important industrial catalyst for making plastics such as polyethylene. “We discovered this interesting looking molecule and realized that it had an extremely short distance between the metal atoms” Theopold said. A rule-of-thumb in chemistry Theopold said is that bond length and bond strength go together so it’s likely that the metal-metal bond is a strong one although Theopold said no one knows for sure. “This molecule is probably not practically useful… The metal is an important industrial catalyst for making plastics such as polyethylene. “We discovered this interesting looking molecule and realized that it had an extremely short distance between the metal atoms” Theopold said. We’re not going to get a patent here or cure cancer” Theopold noted. “Records define the range in which things can exist. It’s just an interesting molecule from a fundamental scientific standpoint.

Colleges cope with bigger classes
Boston Herald – Nov 25, 2007
- n weekday mornings the Cristol Chemistry Building at the University of Colorado is a hive of activity. Every hour hundreds of laptop-toting students file in and out of its theater-style lecture halls where classes are scheduled back to back. In all there are 33 courses at Colorado… Three have more than 1200. Most are broken into sections but even those may have hundreds of students. ne chemistry course is so big that the only place on campus where everyone can take the final exam at once is the Coors Event Center Colorado’s basketball arena. A&T offers remedial courses in basic writing reading math and chemistry. Placement is based on SAT or ACT verbal scores placement tests or the number of classes in a subject a student took in high school. Math classes draw the highest enrollment with 314 students in fall 2006 and 236 students in fall 2007. About 120 students took English and writing courses and about 30 students enrolled in remedial chemistry. ther schools in the UNC system have done away with remedial courses.

No need to be nervous about nonstick
Roanoke Times – Nov 25, 2007
Dozens of reports and studies have turned up conflicting conclusions. So Good Housekeeping talked to experts looked at the major studies and conducted its own lab tests at the Good Housekeeping Research Institute to find out: Just how safe are nonstick pots and pans? The answer is a qualified one. They’re safe says Robert Wolke a professor emeritus of chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh and the author of “What Einstein Told His Cook: Kitchen Science Explained” as long as they’re not overheated. When they are the coating might begin to break down (at the molecular level so you wouldn’t necessarily see it). Then toxic particles and gases some of them carcinogenic can be released. “There’s a whole chemistry set of compounds that will come off when Teflon is heated high enough to decompose” says Wolke. “Many of these are fluorine-containing compounds which as a class are generally toxic… When they are the coating might begin to break down (at the molecular level so you wouldn’t necessarily see it). Then toxic particles and gases some of them carcinogenic can be released. “There’s a whole chemistry set of compounds that will come off when Teflon is heated high enough to decompose” says Wolke. “Many of these are fluorine-containing compounds which as a class are generally toxic. But fluoropolymers the chemicals from which these toxic compounds come are a big part of the coating formula — and the very reason that foods don’t stick to nonstick. If the danger begins when pans overheat then how hot is too hot?”At temperatures above 500 degrees F the breakdown begins and smaller chemical fragments are released” explains Kurunthachalam Kannan an environmental toxicologist at the New York State Department of Health’s Wadsworth Center. DuPont inventor and manufacturer of Teflon agrees that 500 F is the recommended maximum temperature for cooking.

Questions for George W Bush

Then I got into reading about peoples’ near-death experiences in which people had been clinically pronounced dead yet somehow miraculously returned to life. And what they experienced on “the other side” of life. Yeah we can talk about brain chemistry coincidence and so on. At least that’s how it seems to me. I don’t mean to push my views on anybody: Sorry to anybody this message offends! But I still do think this is a profound matter to think about:People with near-death experiences often report as above—-yes. Feeling other peoples’ feelings as if those peoples’ feelings were their own.

“He had a clear bottle of water a gallon jug of water and heturned it red” said Don Still who grew up with Huckabee in thesmall city of Hope Ark. “He talked about how God cleanses our soul. He was probably in the 11th or 12th grade and he was probablytaking chemistry and learned it in chemistry. Science or miracle Still was impressed. Looking back now Stillsaid he knew then that Huckabee – or Mike as he seems to be knownto everyone in Arkansas – was destined for politics “a.
