New network to boost African chemistry

The network was launched by the UK Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) in partnership with the agricultural technology company Syngenta who have donated £1million (approximately US$2million) to kick-start the initiative. "Chemistry and chemists can be the cornerstone of sustainable development" said Temechegn Engida president of the Federation of African Societies of Chemistry at the launch. The initiative aims to enhance the role of chemistry in Africa’s economic and social development and strengthen Africa’s capacity workforce and access to scientific information to help achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals. Agricultural technologies will be a major focus.

The father of Sanjay Awasthi Yogesh Awasthi earned a doctorate in chemistry a Master of Science degree in organic chemistry and a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry all from the University of Lucknow in India. Rajendra Sharma a member of Yogesh Awasthi’s research team has been added as a research associate professor of molecular biology and immunology. Sharma received a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Rajasthan in Jaipur India as well as a Master of Science degree in organic chemistry and a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from the University of Jodhpur in India. Abha Sharma a member of Yogesh Awasthi’s research team has been added as a research assistant professor of molecular biology and immunology. Sharma received a doctorate in biophysics from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi India as well as a Master of Science degree in biochemistry and a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry botany and zoology from Poona University in India.
