The agreement signed by Kathryn Hach-Darrow cofounder and chair of theHach Scientific Foundation and Madeleine Jacobs ACS Executive Directorand CE transfers the foundation’s funds and assets to the ACS. The Hachschose the ACS because according to Hach-Darrow it “represents permanenceand stability and it truly embraces chemistry on a national level. Jacobs says the foundation’s programs are a natural fit with the Societycomplementing what ACS has been doing in high school chemistry but notduplicating any existing programs. ACS will continue the Hach ScientificFoundation’s support of a scholarship program for undergraduate chemistrymajors interested in a career teaching chemistry a scholarship program forchemists who have a degree and who want to pursue careers teachingchemistry and outreach grants to chemistry teachers. Solozhenko’s further experiments revealed that the new phase is superhard with a Vickers hardness of about 50 GPa. The wiki found on the department’s Web site allows anyone to access and contribute or modify content using simple on-line tools. DTSC created the wiki for the Green Chemistry bills signed into law by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in September 2008. These new laws require DTSC to develop a comprehensive approach for assessing potential hazards from chemicals in consumer products and for finding safer alternatives for harmful chemicals used in those products and in the manufacturing processes of goods sold in California.
