— An Emory & Henry College chemistry professor whose research has contributed to efforts to detect cancer is the recipient of the 2009 Virginia utstanding Faculty Award given by the State Council on Higher Education in Virginia. Jim Duchamp who has been teaching chemistry at Emory & Henry since 1994 becomes the fourth E&H professor to win the award and his honor marks the 11th time in 20 years that an E&H professor has won a state or national teaching award. “Emory & Henry is tremendously proud of Jim and his much-deserved honor” said E&H President Rosalind Reichard. “As is true of so many of our excellent professors Jim has a tireless commitment to students and his teaching and his research have had an enormous impact on the lives of students and others beyond this community. ”Duchamp has performed extensive research in the use of endohedral fullerenes which are being developed for use as contrast agents in magnetic resonance images (MRIs) in the detection of tumors.

He said the homeowner’s cost from the property line to the home and the household plumbing likely would be higher. “We are definitely not at that point” Wettering said. “We are still looking at chemistry changes. “Wettering said the quickest and easiest fix is to have residents open their faucet and let the water run for 30 seconds after they get up in the morning or after they have been gone for an extended time. Flushing the system removes lead that might have leached into the water. Huff said she now runs her water for several minutes. “Whether it does anything good or not I don’t know” she said.

Pretzels provide twisted chemistry lesson

So we gave up on getting 24-inch pretzel ropes and settled for much shorter ones. We figured out how to form them into a traditional shape and set them aside to rise again. The next step was to dip the risen pretzels in a baking soda bath and here’s where the chemistry lesson came in. “When you dip a pretzel into a baking soda bath and put it in the oven” wrote Warren in the book “a chemical reaction known as the Maillard reaction occurs accelerating the browning and crisping of the exterior of the pretzel. “Skip the step she said and you end up with pale pretzels. We certainly didn’t want that so into the water they went then back onto the cookie sheet and into the oven. And I’m pleased to report that although not up to Hot Sam size our petite pretzels proved quite good especially with cheese dip — perfect for the big game.
