Salem School District Asks Voters for $9 Million

Salem School District is asking for an increase in property taxes of 25 cents per $100 assessed valuation. The district says it needs to renovate and add on to its junior high and high schools so it can reconfigure its grade levels at both schools. In Chemistry Two Salem High School students are using science labs built in the 1960s. “nce upon a time this was state of the art. Somebody put a lot of money into these labs” Chemistry teacher Vashanti Rahaman said. 40 years later the needs in the lab have changed and so have the demands for safety. “It’s a lab that has tried very hard to stay up with the standards but there is a limit to how far you can go with a facility that is that old” Rahaman said.

Southwestern Teacher Wins Innovation Grant

Patty Lindquist grant recipient; and Daniel George Southwestern superintendent. ‘Patricia Lindquist has received a $1000 teacher innovation grant from the Southwestern Schools Education Foundation the first such grant the charitable organization has given. The money will be utilized to implement technology in the Advanced Placement Chemistry Lab at Southwestern High School. ”The application process was open to every teacher at Southwestern’s elementary middle and high school and was intended to encourage them to think ‘outside the box’ in regards to an innovative learning experience for their students” said Lori Radack foundation president. ”They were all very deserving and creative and the teachers are passionate about their subject areas and their students. It was very hard to choose just one. We hope to receive even more applications in the fall.
