This came to an abrupt end when tinned corned beef gave him food poisoning. By the time he had recovered he was no longer fascinated by poker. Bored with Winnipeg Friedman sneaked onto a cattle train to Montreal where he hung out with a friend who was a graduate chemistry student at McGill University. This sparked his curiosity and he decided to study the subject. Though his academic record was poor someone in the admissions office knew his father and he was allowed into the university. It was a struggle for the first year but by the end of the second Friedman had become the chemistry department’s top student and took a doctorate. The purpose of both projects is to study the ruthenium-catalysed synthesis of amides from alcohols and amines with the concomitant liberation of hydrogen. The aim of the first project is to apply the amidation reaction in the synthesis of biologically important molecules such as peptides peptidomimetics and b-lactams. The aim of the second project is to study the mechanism by experimental and computational methods and to further develop the catalyst. The first position will be supervised by Professor Robert Madsen while the second position will be supervised by Assistant Professor Peter Fristrup and Professor Robert Madsen.
