About UsRSC PublishingMembersEducationPolicyLibraryChemsocConferencesNewsChemistry World. Haemagglutinin is a protein which influenza viruses use to bind to specific sugar molecules on the surface of the host cell. It is thought that the more tightly the haemagglutinin binds the more infective the virus could be. The avian influenza virus for example has a particular haemagglutinin that binds to sugar molecules found in cells in the upper respiratory tract of birds. These sugars are slightly different to those found in the cells of the human upper respiratory tract but if bird flu haemagglutinin mutated in a way that favoured stronger binding to the ‘human’ sugar it could result in a strain of the virus that could be more easily transmitted between humans.
