IN THE MAIL: Climate bill threatens chemical-industry jobs

But as the bill moves to the Senate the American Chemistry Council believes senators must make changes so we can have a level playing field for American manufacturers that compete in the global economy. The council hopes senators will build a comprehensive climate policy that will improve the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions while not harming American businesses ability to take on our competitors. Specifically the emissions allowance allocation and schedule are at the heart of climate policy. The council hopes senators will carefully work through the legislation and continue the discussion around how best to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the U.

What a place we live in!Ever wonder why immediately after a rain — and especially rains accompanied by lightning — our plants seem to perk up and want to grow again? A few simple reasons associated with chemistry makes this phenomenon easily understood. The water we use to irrigate our lawns gardens and shrubs whether well water or a municipal supply contains minerals and compounds including salts such as calcium chloride potassium chloride and sodium chloride. Underground and surface water sources vary in the amounts of these soluble solids from almost none in water from wells in the Eldorado Sonora and zona area to higher salts in wells and municipal water sources in areas around San Angelo. When water other than rainwater is applied to soils for irrigation of plants these minerals and compounds are included. During extended periods of no rain soils near the plant root zone can become loaded with these salts.
